...they are the undercurrent of a long lived problem in the United States. Women, and especially black women have been given little control of their reproductive rights in this country. During slave times, white masters often impregnated their slaves and used the resulting children for labor.

During a brief period, black women were used as guinea pigs for doctors training to learn how to perform hysterectomies.

Another interesting source of empathy is the story of Margaret Garner a pre-civil war slave woman and the subject of Toni Morrison's book "Beloved".

Conditions were so bad and the treatment was so cruel and dehumanizing, that this mother killed her child rather than have her grow up to be raped, worked and sold. That is how horrible slavery was. Can you imagine? Your own child is to be taken from you and sold to an old white man like Rep. Frank to be raped, and then put to work in the fields. When the child resulting from that rape is born, the master would then start the cycle again.

It is unconscionable to me that anyone could think this treatment of humans as livestock is a "better" situation than what we see today.
First, if this man is so out of touch with reality that he is not aware of the history of this nation, I question his credentials to hold office. Second, if he is aware and is just this callous, I question his humanity.

From the article below:

"In 1975, a hysterectomy cost $800 compared to a tubal ligation, giving surgeons, who were reimbursed by Medicaid, a financial incentive to perform the more extensive operation-despite its 20 times greater risk of killing the patient.

Given the history of the treatment of blacks, especially black women in this country, I think we might all agree that the Representative from Arizona's statement was at least insensitive, if not flat out racist.  I for one think it is just indicative of the racist current running through the GOP.

When I see this type of brazen callousness at the top levels of our government I am reminded that there still exists a need for affirmative action.

And one last point, since I am the resident anti-theist, these slave holders were "good' Christians for the most part.
