So instead of doing the right thing, they just canceled the whole thing? What a bunch of dumb asses.

So now even more stigma is on this poor girl because everyone will be saying.."She is the one that got our prom canceled" instead of "Look at her, She has got the guts to stand up for who she is but it is too bad we have a bunch of ignorant fools running our school".

GREAT DIARY. I have been really busy at work and have missed joining yo folks.  I heard of this 'thing' in Mississippi today for the very first time.

Two of my Facebook friends posted this back to back.  Then I had to look here, I knew I'd find it.  Here's my response to both of them:

It is just wrong from every standpoint. Okay, this girl has come out and she is entitled to her own feelings, not to have others dictate her life.

But what if the girl had been an abuse victim and wasn't ready to be a date yet, but still wanted to go to her prom? Obviously a female date would be the right choice for her.

And as for the dress, sure, it's a prom and formal attire is required. But it stops there. Dresses don't work for every female. So why should it me mandated?

Of course I am not from Mississippi, but I do live in Oklahoma, which is (almost?) as bad. I don't think there was any overt rule on the dances having to be coed- my best friend at the time took two girls with him (he was gay) but this was not remarked upon. There were girls who went dateless with their friends who were girls.... which is I guess how this prom could have been approached.

But they were setting up for a challenge (which they had a good chance to overcome with the ACLU on board) against the unfairness of a rule that openly stated that dates must be of the opposite sex. Obviously that is anti-gay. But what about a kid going stag? What about two friends going? If it is really about supporting heteros in their perfect dream world in which everyone is just like them, then you couldn't allow a guy with two dates, or a couple of hetero football players whose dates backed out at the last minute either. Obviously the dance Nazis that canceled the prom rather than deal with the legal ramifications of their unfair rule hope to turn the girls' community against them (as if they don't have enough against them already).

Would it not be a perfect twist of irony for the school to be the brunt of a community backlash? Think of all the businesses, restaurants, dress and tux rental shops, beauty salons, and limo services that won't be patronized. The economy sucks right now. Depending on the size of the town, this could be a rather large hit to their economy. Morale is down. The kids who had dates and plans for their big romantic payoff after enduring 4 years of high school in Hicksville ought to be pretty irate. (At the school. Not the lesbians.)

Canceling a prom to spite one couple could (and should) bite them in the ass.

One can only hope.

This is the same school that was busted for having prayer over the intercom during school. It also got busted for Having bible classes. Now they say ( the school officials) that it has nothing to do with religion but at the same time and breath say such activity does not live up to the "biblical values" that this area enjoys. Um...Hello...that's showing your putting religion in there. Duh! So how was that shrimp dinner you had last week teacher? My what a lovely red dress you have on Mrs teacher. What need a tampon during school Ms Principal? How much is your daughter worth Mr Superintendent? All things in the (same book of the) bible that are against the christian law and they quote against the gays. Leviticus.  

This is typical behavior for southern states to exhibit. I live in Houston Texas and a young man tore down a Mexican flag  on Cinco de mayo in protest that this is America not Mexico and he threw it in the garbage. He was rewarded a full ride to some conservative college for his "bravery"
