I can't remember if the 60-day hiatus of capitalism vs socialism is up yet.

So I'll just sit here and laugh my ass off.  Funny shit!

I have been on the wrong side of this argument.  I've been so goddam selfish!

What do you think would happen if one of those pets in the back yard zoo got sick? Holy shit, we shouldn't be working on human health care, we need to reform pet insurance, there is where the real danger lies.

Its on funnyordie.com, which means its getting no play on the networks. It's only being watched by prepubescent teenagers who were looking up pubic hole care, not public health care, and, by us.  But we sure do enjoy it.

    Insurance companies

by: ldrntexasWed Sep 23, 2009 at 16:46:27 PM CDT

I am a lifelong dem and voted proudly for President Obama but I must say that I am truly sick and tired of insurance companies being blamed for ALL the trouble with the healthcare system.  I have worked for doctors for years.  We are an unhealthy country; we smoke too much, we eat too much, we have an increasingly older population.  We are hypertensive, we have diabetes & heart disease.  All these issues cause us to use our insurance (those of us who are fortunate enough to have it)more & more.  More claims filed, more money paid out by insurance companies.  I also know that there are doctors who are "upcoding"; if one office visit code doesn't get reimbursed "enough" then use a different code.  We are performing more blood tests for routine visits than we used to, etc.  Providers need to control their costs as well.  If an employer's insurance plan is "self funded", this may enable employees to appeal denials directly to the employer and some of them will authorize payment. Check to see if you have a self funded plan. Going to a network provider saves everyone money as well.  We need to educate ourselves about our insurance coverage, about our health, and take charge.  After dealing with ins companies for almost 20 years, not all of them are bad; some are quite easy to deal with.  It's easy to always blame the big guy.  The little guys need to take responsiblity as well!

    Excellent post

    by: ThePantaloon.comWed Sep 23, 2009 at 17:11:41 PM CDT

I agree with almost everything you said.  Americans aren't as healthy as they should be, and I've personally seen providers overcharge and churn unnecessary services.

"Easy to deal with" is not the same as being a fair company. There is a massive problem with the way insurance companies operate, deny coverage, and profit from sickness.

But you're right; there are more problems to fix.

    Just a thought...

by: KauclairThu Sep 24, 2009 at 15:26:48 PM CDT

..I am in no way affiliated with the health care industry...  but with the ever-so-popular (and oh-so-freakin-awesome) shows like House and other far fetched medical dramas... are people now seeing tiny problems and blowing them up in their heads??

I work with an older woman who was one day reminiscing on how pregnancy used to be detected... your belly got big and round and you started throwing up a lot... not the same mentality as this "I'm a week late, I'm calling my doctor!!"

Maybe these culture changes have something to do with our rising medical costs?? Demands on unnecessary tests due to paranoid thoughts??

    Just wondering...

    Sure..

    by: lamb12Fri Sep 25, 2009 at 06:36:59 AM CDT

they play a part. Doctors are not only trying to treat what is ailing you, but, there is also a question looming on their minds with every test they order.

Will I be sued if I order test A and not test B?

I better order all I can, just to make sure.

Big pharma, on TV hawking pills like snake oil salesmen.
legs hurt, take this...can't get it up, try that.
Itchy eyes...have I got something for you!, and it goes on and on.

And let's not forget the "ambulence" chasing lawyers on TV.

Doctor didn't order Test A but ordered Test B, come talk to us we'll sue.
Did this medication cause you to have a rash?, Let's sue the bastards.
We gotta guy here in town who runs ads all the time.
He says he's "For the People", more like for the profit he can make off of you.

Now I am not saying that there are not legitimate issues out there that should be pursued through the system, but, most of the time they remind me of the guys in prison who file a lawsuit cause they got crunchy p-nut butter instead of creamy, How dare they!!

The TRUE reality is that everybodys health  in this country is a for profit venture, and there are those out there that will hawk every sniffle, ache, itch, and whatever else they can think of to make money, no matter the cost.
Greenbacks speak louder than anything in this country, the GOP is proving this true, almost on a daily basis, as do some of the dems.
Ill people are cash cows, healthy people deter from profits.

I DISAGREE WITH THE LAWYER BASHING

    by: ThePantaloon.comFri Sep 25, 2009 at 10:34:07 AM CDT

Blaming lawyers for out-of-control health insurance companies is straight out of the Republican playbook.

I can tell you from personal and professional experience that there is little merit to the argument that personal injury lawsuits are the problem.  Placing arbitrary caps on medical malpractice cases or even suggesting arbitration instead of litigation is completely unjust.

In most cases, doctors are ordering extra tests and performing unnecessary exams for several reasons, including inefficiency, incompetence, and, most importantly, profit.  I recently spoke with a patient's advocate who assists people full-time with disputes over medical bills.

She said unequivocally that doctors routinely overcharge and do unnecessary tests because (a) it's all about the money not the oath anymore, and (b) insurance companies don't pay 100 cents on the dollar for claims.

    I know..

    by: lamb12Fri Sep 25, 2009 at 11:03:34 AM CDT

having worked in the health care Industry, and being a patient my entire life, I have been on both sides of the coin.

Maybe I was not clear on the Lawyer thing.

What I am saying is these adds encourage people to sue not only over the issues that should be arbitrated, but, promote the idea that you can sue over anything.

there is a family here that is sueing the person who saved their child by performing CPR. In the process of performing CPR, the childs rib was cracked.
They are suing him for medical and causing bodily harm to the child.

i guess if your ok with that thats fine, but, I think that is a friovolous lawsuit.
BTW, the lawyer is the one I referred to in my other post/.

They are contributors to the crap ass system that is the healthcare available in this country.

    it's all about the Benjamins.

I also said I was not bashing all Lawyers, but, you cannot tell me that some of these class actions they advertise on TV, are not about getting money, lots of it, and nothimg more.

Again, It's all about the Benjamins, on all sides.

And in closing, I am a bit offendrd at the Republican inflection.
If those bastards came and walked a mile in my shoes with all the bullshit I have had to go through with limited healthcare and no health care, they might get a damn clue of how f-ing hard it is out here.
Until they have no access they will never freaking get it.

    The Benjamins win everytime.

    by: spiral115Thu Sep 24, 2009 at 02:37:54 AM CDT

And that is saying a lot because I can't stand Will Ferrel! Well done. LDRNTEXAS: we blame the insurance companies because they are money grubbing evil entities that let people die every day while their CEOs decide which of their houses they want to hag out on that day. The are an abomination to any decent country and need to be dealt with harshly.
